Research alert! A new study shows how climate change affected the diversity of Congo River fish during glacial periods—crucial knowledge for understanding modern threats to fish in this species-rich region.

Over the last about 2.6 million years, polar ice caps have continuously expanded and retracted during glacial and interglacial cycles. This is thought to be a significant driver of biodiversity on land, but less is known about its effect on freshwater systems, especially in the Congo River. 

Using molecular tools, scientists focused on four species of fish endemic to the lower Congo River, known as lamprologine cichlids. Their findings, published in the journal Integrative and Comparative Biology, suggest speciation of Congo fish likely occurred when the river’s water level decreased, isolating populations of fish into smaller pockets of water, leading to the rise of new species over time.

a misconception I see a lot- and have even believed myself! -is, "well, women in western history could only wear all those layers because there was no climate change!"

which is. not really the case, as far as I can tell?

obviously this varies from era to era, but I was looking into historical temperatures here in Boston from the earliest consistent records (1893) and I was surprised to see several 90+-degree days most summers throughout the 1890s (fahrenheit)

now, I am not at all a climate-change denier. extreme heat has been getting more likely and more frequent the world over- I'm fully aware that I'm posting this during what some scientists are calling the hottest July on record globally. that being said, the idea that our ancestors NEVER had to deal with the temperatures we're facing now is factually incorrect for many of the areas worldwide where the clothing we're talking about was worn (and most scientists aren't saying that, I know! this is a pop history commentary, not a scientific one)

the fact is that, in most of the western world, yes, our ancestors did wear That Clothing in These Temperatures. less often and for shorter periods of time, most years, but...it happened! and they found ways to deal!

albums & activism part 1: saviors by green day

as part of doing something productive with this blog, I'm starting a series where I look into how musicians have done activism and reviewing their music at the same time!

the obvious choice to start with, who have a long resume of activism activities under their belts (and who 5sos wanted to be like for a long time, driving them to pursue their current 12+ year career) is green day! they've been going on for more than 35 years now, through every historical event any of us remember, and have been on campaigns for HIV/AIDS destigmatisation, for various peace and aid drives, natural resource extraction and climate change action. in 2024 they have released their 14th studio album while the albums that boosted their fame, dookie and american idiot, turn 20 and 30 respectively!

because my cd player isn't working and can't play my american idiot cd I decided to jump right in and listen to saviors! and 2024 is already the year of albums I absolutely adore being released, so I'm like, how many more good ones can there be? there's got to be a limit. now, I didn't grow up listening to green day like a lot of people did and I've heard a scattered bunch of their more famous songs of course, but I didn't really know what to expect. and I'm only halfway through but I think i'm in love

the genre is everything I like to listen to, there's a lot of music going on and varying melodies on the top lines, riffs, etc. it's got just the right amount of angst and sadness and optimism. plus the music fits this vibe perfectly and is just as layered, the kind of thing I can see myself making into orchestral remixes once I've worked through 5sos' discography and some of my other favourite artists--or even before if they keep growing on me! I can relate to a lot of the concepts I'm grasping on first listen which means there's gonna be a lot more hidden that I'm gonna pick up on the second and subsequent listens and frankly I can't wait for this new album to become something I cherish for years to come.

my first activism lesson that I got from this album, is that you have to express how you really feel about yourself and your life and incorporate it with how you feel about injustice to make a really good song and a really heartfelt message. this can be seen in the first track, the american dream is killing me, which as an urban designer trying to fix things like homelessness as well as someone who's had my own share of injustices from 'the system' hits home excellently. related to this, I love the inclusion of a lot of major keys in songs with themes we're sad about, because we need optimism to keep us going. we can see this in the song corvette summer which sounds like a happy anthem but has lyrics like 'maybe i've had enough of this shit brigade'. it also exemplifies the fact that they have realised what music means to them as a band: they don't want money and fame and the things that mark 'success' in our world, but instead music is an outlet for pain.

overall this seems like a really sustainable attitude to have and it checks out with everything I already know about green day and also the fact that they've been going for almost 40 years. the passion and love has to be there. and it is, and I'm so glad that we get to witness this legendary band and that we get to see their impact in the music industry and the world as a whole. there's a lot we can learn from green day but also some really good music to listen to and I hope you go check out their latest album saviors!

Eunice Newton Foote was born on July 17, 1819. An American scientist, inventor, and women's rights campaigner, she was the first scientist known to have examined the warming effect of sunlight on different gases and to have suggested that an increase in the proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would change its temperature and have an effect on climate. A 1856 paper of hers was the first known publication in physics by a woman. She went on to patent several inventions. Foote died in 1888 and for almost a hundred years her contributions were lost, before being rediscovered by women academics in the twentieth century.

Brazil is going through one of the worst climatic crisis ever seen.

i live in the southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. we have been suffering from extreme, nonstop rainstorms for a week now. the rivers are flooding, reaching 4-6 meters above their natural level. people are being rescued by helicopters, neighborhoods are being evacuated. entire cities are slowly but surely becoming submerged in water. 60 people missing and counting. 32 deaths and counting.

and this is not new. last november also had a flood like this one. 50 dead, many material losses. it happened again this january, with thousands being left without power or water for days.

three catastrophical disasters within less than a year. three disasters only a few months apart.

this is not natural.

unsustainable agricultural practices and politics led to this. a complete disregard for nature led to this. greed led to this. always greed.

when it comes to the climate crisis, i cannot stress this enough: we need to act now if we still want to live. disasters like this are going to happen more often and they're going to be much, much worse. this flood is being considered the worst climatic catastrophe in the history of my state. i don't know how long it will take for another bigger one to happen and take its place. i just know it will be sooner than it should.
